CHAPTER EIGHT

A Brisk Incursion

Karun-Do rolled over once more in the foul-smelling slurry, flapped his four hands vigorously, and slid his smooth, mud-caked body up against the side of the rough stone bath. Karun-Jal-Dano sidled up beside him and touched his forehead with all seven fingers of one hand. Karun-Do hissed with pleasure as the tingling sensation insinuated itself into every cell of his heavy-set body. This was the finale to yet another delightful instructional session in the art of passion. He was already looking forward to the next one. Karun-Jal-Dano had promised to induct him into the first intermediate stage, where she promised he’d experience pleasure on a level that he could scarcely imagine. He hissed again with anticipation.

Karun-Jal-Dano moved to the end of the slurry bath and ascended the steps. “Come, Karun-Do,” she said. “We must get cleaned up before our meal with Chu. Things are going to get quite interesting over the next few standard time measures. We may not have an opportunity to meet with him again until it’s all over.”

Karun-Do issued a muted hiss and followed her to the nearby wash stall where high-powered jets of perfumed water removed the grungy mud. The astringent feel of the water against his soft skin reminded him that this final activity was also part of the unique holistic experience to which Karun-Jal-Dano had introduced him. He harbored a touch of regret that his other mates were excluded from participation in these sensuous exercises. Secrecy dictated that they be kept ignorant of the existence and purpose of the Xonan clan, as well as his frequent absences from the domicile with Karun-Jal-Dano. But as good Saarti mates, they had not complained, and they continued to do their duty conscientiously in accordance with the sacred texts and guidance of the Conclave.

Even when he fell behind in his transformation schedule, none of them bothered him about it. It was Karun-Jal-Dano who insisted that he make the time available in his busy schedule to catch up with this critical activity in order to maintain the cover of his increasingly close and intimate relationship with her and the Xonan clan. He complied with her advice but made it clear that at a fundamental level, his preference was to spend all of his spare time with her. She promised him that such a scenario was inevitable, but until the time was right, he had to maintain his image as the respectable Gona-fearing leader of the Saarti.

As his personal attendant dried his body, Karun-Do reflected on how well things had gone over the past few standard elapsed time units. His internal intelligence group had been established under his fiercely loyal, competent, and recently promoted deputy, Karel-Do, the only non-Xonan member of his staff. Using computron technology provided by the Xonan clan, a comprehensive list of potential enemies and general troublemakers in the Community was compiled. The Conclave, as expected, had met all of his demands for absolute autonomy and had issued guidance to the Community to the
